I guarantee if you ask any golfer how their game went, the first thing they will tell you, regardless of their score, will be what went wrong in the round. As humans we tend to focus on the negative, in life, sport and business. It's just they way we are wired, always looking for the negative rather than focusing on the positive. This got me thinking, instead of fighting against our natural tendency, why don't we embrace it and make it work for us in a positive way. So lets explore this suggestion further...... Consider as aspect of your game that's giving you grief at the moment. For example, "Why do I struggle to reduce my handicap?" Take a few moments to mull this frustration over, focusing on all the negative aspects related to it - trust me this will come far easier than you think. Write down each point you identify on to a sheet of paper or onto a post-it note. Take your time, don't rush it. In the example given you could have suggestions such as - I always bogey or double bogey a certain hole - I struggle with playing out of the bunkers - I fail to hit greens in regulation on the par 4's Whatever you come up with make a note and add it to your list. Once you've completed the exercise, place your list to one side and forget about it for a day or two. With fresh eyes take a look at each point you've made and now consider what you need to do to resolve each one. For example the hole that you regularly play badly on, consider alternative ways to play the hole. Such as take a different club off the tee, or think about where to land your ball to take the trouble out of play. If you find you struggle to get out of bunkers book a lesson with your professional and learn how to play these shots. Hitting greens in regulation doesn't have to be your only focus. Alternatively work on your wedge play to give you a chance to sink a putt or consider these to be your bogey holes and play other holes for par or birdies. You will be amazed how quickly you we come up with solutions to resolve your frustrations. Give it a go this weekend and let me know how you get on.
